Immerse yourself in “la dolce vita della bella Italia”!
Individual arrival in Pisa. Get an overview of the old maritime republic that Pisa used to be. You reach the historic center easily from your hotel. Overnight in Pisa.
Day 2: Pisa - San Miniato (75 km)
Passing the Leaning Tower, you leave Pisa and make your way to Lucca. This charming city, surrounded by fully preserved Renaissance walls, invites you to explore its narrow streets and historical sights. Climb the 45-metre-high, oak-covered Torre Guinigi and be enchanted by the impressive view. Leaving the city center, you will pass the impressive aqueduct, which was built to supply water in the 19th century. Continue towards San Miniato, a hidden gem high up on a hill, known for its medieval architecture and breathtaking views. The historic old town with its famous medieval fortress awaits you. Overnight stay in San Miniato.
The next stop on your journey is Gambassi Terme, known for the thermal baths of the same name with their healing waters. Enjoy a break and explore the charming old town before getting back on the saddle and continuing your ride to San Gimignano.
This medieval town is known for its well-preserved towers and rich history. Stroll through the narrow streets, sample local specialties and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this enchanting town, which is often referred to as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”. Overnight stay in San Gimignano.
After a hearty breakfast and an espresso, you leave San Gimignano and cycle through the rolling hills of Tuscany to the small town of Colle di Val d’Elsa. In the Parco Fluviale Alta Val D’Elsa, you can cool off in a fairytale river. Finally, you reach the magnificent city of Siena, famous for its Gothic cathedral, the central Piazza del Campo and its rich cultural history. Overnight stay in Siena.
Today you will explore the northernmost section of the famous L’Eroica cycle race route.
Narrow asphalt roads and gravel tracks alternate and wind their way through the endless vineyards. Immerse yourself in Italy’s most famous wine-growing region. Visit the Castello di Brolio, a landmark of the region and home to the Ricasoli family. If you wish, you can enjoy a glass of Chianti Classico and visit the beautiful castle garden. Overnight stay as on the previous day.
Pack something to eat and check your puncture kit! Today you leave Siena and cross an almost deserted region with many forests and lonely tracks. You can fill up on drinking water in the two quaint villages of Mensano and Monteguidi. An unforgettable view awaits you in Mensano! Afterwards, you will cross the Berignone nature reserve, which enchants its guests with its untouched nature. It is a place to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and natural splendor of Tuscany. You reach the Etruscan city of Volterra in the early afternoon and have time to visit the local sights. The famous Teatro Romano, the cathedral, the Piazza dei Priori, the Palazzo Viti or one of the many alabaster workshops await you. Overnight stay in Volterra.
You need to have a good breakfast for the last stage. The length of today’s tour is 92 km, but 14 km of this is optional. This is a detour to the medieval castle ruins of Rocca di Pietracassia on a 530 m high hill, strategically and militarily important between Volterra and Pisa. The Teatro del Silenzio, a modern amphitheater that blends into the natural hilly landscape, will impress you with its changing art installations on the way to Pisa. You will pass an impressive and strange facility: the European Gravitational Observatory, a research center for the study of gravitational waves. You then reach the destination of your journey. Overnight stay in Pisa.
After breakfast and before departure, it is worth taking a short walk to the Leaning Tower. Independent departure (see “Arrival and departure” or extension in Pisa see “Extras”).
